The Road from Bangkok to Angkor

Cambodian Gas Station
Cambodian Gas Station
, just outside of the town of Poipet, on the Thailand border. This has always been the quickest land route border crossing to Siem Reap from Bangkok, but untill recently it was also known as “the highway from hell.” I am happy to report that it is now (June 13, 2009) a very smooth two hour ride (by taxi or bus) from the border to Siem Reap.

These (soda bottle) gas stations are actually in danger of becoming extinct very soon. At various points along the newly finished road, you can see signs of modern restaurants and gas stations under construction.
